Reiki is one of the energy healing techniques I use in my psychotherapy practice. Reiki was discovered in Tibet about three thousand years ago and was rediscovered in Japan in the late 1800s by Dr. Usui Shiki Ryoho and brought to the United States by Helen Takata.
To state it simply, Reiki is universal life force energy that is channeled through the Reiki practitioner and passed to the client and acts as a jump start to the client’s own energy field. It involves the chakra system. Chakras simply put are spinning wheels of energy surrounding our bodies. Some of us believe that physical illness can start as an imbalance in the charkas before it is manifested in the physical body. Reiki can be given to any living thing including animals and plants as well as humans.
I not only give Reiki sessions to clients, but I teach Reiki as well. There are 4 different teaching levels of Reiki; Reiki I, Reiki II, Reiki III Master, and the Master Teacher level. As one progresses through each level the energy intensifies. Reiki I involves body work and learning the various hand positions and prepares one to give a session to someone. Reiki II involves learning 3 symbols that help intensify the energy. Long distance healing also is learned in Reiki II. Reiki III Master level involves learning one more symbol and using crystals for healing work. It is for those that are dedicated to studying and practicing Reiki for the rest of their lives. The Master Teacher level of Reiki is for those that want not only to give Reiki sessions to others but also teach it to others. It is only once you are taught the levels that you are equipped to give others a session. This level occurs over a period of several months. The passing of attunements is taught and the students are to give several Reiki sessions to different people over a period of time. One of these people must be their teacher. Attunements are the vehicle by which the Reiki energy is passed from “Source” to one person to another. It must be done in person and not by simply watching a video. Various numbers of attunements are given by the instructor in each of the Reiki levels.
I teach the various Reiki levels on the weekends. Each level takes a full day except the teacher level spans a period of several months. The cost of each level is stated below:
- Reiki I - $150
- Reiki II- $250
- Reiki III Master - $350
- Master Teacher Level - $500
- Reiki III & Master Teacher Level - $650
In my practice I give Reiki sessions to clients who request it to work on some of their emotional issues. To me it is like going through the back door to access one’s higher self. It is very gentle and relaxing.
The process I follow in giving Reiki to a client is as follows; I first invite the client to lay on my Reiki table fully clothed. I just ask that they take their shoes off. I explain to the client that Reiki involves noninvasive touch along their main chakras. If someone does not want to be touched, I just hold my hand a couple of inches above their energy field. I then test one’s chakras to see if they are going in the correct direction and to balance them. I then do an invocation to draw in the energy. Then I do a guided imagery with the client to help them open up to the energy and be receptive to it. I then ask the client what their intention is for the session and then proceed to do the actual Reiki session. At the end of the session I ground the client and say a closing statement. I then process with the client what the session was like for them.
Reiki can assist with various problems and is a great tool for relaxation. I once used it on a client that was having a full blown panic attack in my office. She was shaking so much it was like she was convulsing. When she finally agreed to do Reiki she started calming down within 10 minutes of starting the session. By the end of the session 50 minutes later, she was completely calm and extremely centered.
Reiki truly is a gift to us all!!!
